What Your Health Care Doesn't Cover
The cost of health care and medical insurance continues to rise every year. In general, health insurance plans can vary widely, including Medigap policies which help cover many costs. Check your policy for exclusions, limitations and costs you are responsible for, so you can experience a healthy retirement.

For those on Medicare, the following services are generally not covered (with some exceptions):

  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic services
  • Custodial care (like help with bathing or using the bathroom)
  • Dental care and dentures
  • Routine eye care and eyeglasses
  • Foot care
  • Hearing aids and exams
  • Incontinence Products
  • Laboratory tests for screening purposes
  • Orthopedic shoes
  • Physical exams (routine or yearly)
  • Prescription drugs (covered by separate Medicare Part D)
  • Preventative shots to prevent illness
  • Syringes or insulin
  • Health care while traveling outside of the United States

Did you know that Medicare is an individual policy only? If you retire and go on Medicare, your spouse will not be part of your coverage. They will need to be age 65, and apply for themselves. If there is an age difference and one of you gives up your employer-sponsored insurance at retirement, you could face a gap in coverage for the younger spouse. Be sure and explore your options carefully before you decide to retire.
